use of images in books and copyright

    Dear all
I have a brief question about the use of images in printed works.
if for example i took a print screen of a program would i then be able to reproduce that picture in a book?
    cheers

This is a hard one as I think that copyright law is slightly different around the world. I would say check out the US gov's copyright info (easily accessible on Google.) It might give you some decent info. I think any representation of someone else's work needs to be cited, or you must have permission to use it before hand.

    Ok thanks for the help.
I am just thinking about all the MS office help books that show screen dumps of Microsoft products, i cant imagine Microsoft passing up the opportunity to charge an author.
