A non-comic story with pictures and words...

I started my story a long time ago as a comic, because I liked to draw and what have you. Then I made a book about of it instead, but I always wanted to incorporate a lot of pictures in with it as well... though not to the degree that it becomes a comic book or 'graphic novel' or whatever. Anyone know of any kinds of stories like this so I can get an idea of how other people may have thrown their stuff together?

Hi Beef, I am surprised you haven't had more response, there seems to be a lot of interest in the direction you are enquiring about. Not from me because I know very little about the hybrid you describe. But as usual,(ahem!) I have an opinion.

Because it's commercially viable, most future novels will include all sorts of illustrations and photographs, - it's cheap to reproduce.

It's not difficult to envisage graphic artists getting billing under the authors name and in the case of re-issued classics, above the author. It's not a new concept (Gulliver's Travels) it's just cheaper to include in an e-book and hard copy. I'm reading a paperback at the moment which has photographs as Chapter headings (poorly done) and in my novel I have included three photographs and indicated two more.

If you don't get any 'informed', further response, I'm sure you are on the right track.

I was perplexed by the number of WFers who's genre was YA and Fantasy. I thought I'd have a look at the shelf space devoted to YA and Fantasy in the largest bookstore in London- not only was it tiny but the shelf space given to Graphic Novels was nearly three times as large.

    It's a commercial world.

This has always struck me as well, though it is worth considering that what sells in a real life, physicall, bookshop might not be the same as in a virtual store like "Amazon".
A Read for the Train, a collection of short stories, flash fiction and verse. Its cheaper on Lulu, 25% discount.

What's to be perplexed about? Forums like this one actively encourage the less-than-mature. Go to a site that's involved with racing cars or gardening or farm machinery and there's hardly a kid to be seen. Let alone heard. *insert clapping smiley*

beef_razor - I googled "illustrated stories" and got over 1.6 million hits. Maybe something there would help you.

It stands for Young Adult - meaning teenagers; it's been a rapidly growing niche between children's books and adult books.
