    Writing Practice

I found this in my twitter feed today retweeted from Michael Ian Black - although I won't pretend to know who he is.

Writing tip: write a thousand words every day no matter what. If they make sense all together, even better.

I do try to write at least 500 words a day, be it a blog post or a journal entry.

Does anyone have any daily writing practises that they follow?

Hmm... Writing 1000 words a day? Well, if they aren't related, then sure. I do my blogs, comments on the forum, write on my journal, post comments on Facebook and do Tweeting. I'm pretty sure with all that, I write at least a thousand words.

Besides, all I've said are pretty much practice in themselves already.

As for formal, strict, writing practice, e.g. writing a 500-word Flash Fiction per day... Nah. I don't really do that, or at least not everyday.

I try to write fairly regularly, although it depends on whether work gets in the way or not. As part of my work, I blog, however, and as I contribute to it daily or near-daily, I usually write something of length in the course of an average day.

As he says, write every day where possible; once you get used to doing that, you soon find the stories piling up. If you can find an hour to write you can put down a thousand words every day.

I only write when the foundations of a story have come through in my head. I find trying to write something is no good at all, I need that spark first, but I doubt he meant it'll improve your writing ability, so ignore that.

As an exercise to get you into the rhythm of writing more often in a more focused way, I can see it being helpful. When it starts to feel like a chore, I stop, but I write thousands of words every single day anyway, and speak about the same. We're always practicing, almost sub-consciously. I really don't worry about it to be honest, I just write, but if it's helpful for you, keep doing it I say. Good luck .
