    Writing Software

What do you use to write your stories?

Also, does anyone know of a software program like word, except tailored to fictional writers? Not talking about a addon program that works with word, but a program itself like word that helps with spelling, grammar?

I use OpenOffice because it's automatically bundled with Ubuntu. It's got all the basic tools that a WordProcessor should have. Admittedly its spellchecker isn't the best, but that can also be a good thing for you, to learn from your own mistakes.

It can also export files to PDF format, which comes in very handy at times. =)

I used to use Open Office but switched to Google Docs because I like their filing system and overall features. Find and replace a word helps if a character's name changes—not sure if Open Office has that, though it might.
Let's see if my above post is deleted without explanation. Wouldn't be the first time.

As a Linux user, I use OpenOffice; in the short period where I mainly used KDE, KOffice. I don't think they're any better or worse than Microsoft Office, but they're free, open-source, and run on Linux.
Usually these programs do help with spelling, though, and if you write in a different language than what the program uses by default, further dictonaries can be installed.

@caelum: It does in fact. I've had to use it many times.

@Elynae: Yeah, whenever I'm doing something through French or German, it's a real help.

When I actually write I use Office Word, and sometimes when I'm feeling creative, PowerPoint. Right now I'm using yWriter to help organize my thoughts: characters, rules of the world, miscellaneous notes. I find that it's a pretty neat program, but as far as using it beyond a notepad and organizer, I wouldn't.

Or I use the good old fashioned pen and paper.

I personally use Open Office. It's like the Microsoft one, but better, and free. I don't understand why the schools waste money with Microsoft.

@MoonAlley I used to prefer the 'old fashioned' way because I seemed to be more creative then. Now, though I prefer a laptop and Open Office because my hand's get tired from writing. (And my handwriting looks like crap!)

I went on exchanges to two separate schools in France, and they used Open Office, but that may also be that it gives better French Language support.
