Thread: humans and fire?

He there everyone,

I am looking for some advice. For a story I am working on (jointly with another writer) I need four categories of humanoid creatures of which each is somehow related to an element. With three of them I have been able to find something, but I am struggling with the fourth. This is what I have got:

Earth - witches (they are creatures that care for the earth and walk on it so earth)
Air - angels (they are creatures that fly so air)
Water - mermaids (they are creatures that swim so water)
Fire: ?

Does anyone known of a humanoid creature (like the ones above) that is related to fire. I need a creature that is made of fire, or lives of fire, or can stand the touch of fire or something like that (not xmen or something like that). I can't think of anything.

If you think you know a beter creatures for one of the other elements than I would love to hear that too.

Dragon. There have been stories where human looking people can change into these and back or have all of the powers of a dragon but are still in human form.
Just make one up if it comes to it.

What about the devil and his demons who are supposed to live in hell?

Dragonpeople, salamander-humanoids(check the mythology of the salamander) or lizardmen spawned from volcanoes would be interesting, or demons to contrast your angels. You could also use Djinn, both mystical and ancient. They would make a good addition, as keepers of ancient alchemical knowledge, capable of vanishing into flames or disappearing into the burning desert sand. An other option is the Afreet/Ifrit who are more demonic innature. In general I recommend looking into Arabian mythology, before they became monotheistic Muslims they had a pretty interesting belief system.


I also recommend that you expand the race of witches to encompass banshees, huldras, harpies and other beings. These could be witches that transcended into a pure magical form or something, and they would give you a very colorful range of individuals to play with, and you could also create some interesting frictions between mermaids and witches that turned into Sirens like the ones of ancient Greece, sitting on cliffs by the shore and so on, causing the mermaids to get the blame for sinking ships.

You could also toy with the various angels. Ordinary angels, warrior arch angels, six-winged seraphim, then you have dominions, thrones and other types of angels that don't really have a human form, but you could use their characteristics to create specific angelicals.

With the merefolk you can just vary the type of fish to make them interesting ;P

Djinn, they are fire spirits in some mythologies.

I once knew an Aries lady quite unlike any other female I'd previously met. Phwoaar! Most untypically human in her behaviour. Aries is a Fire sign. Perhaps this has some potential.

earth-giants/centaur--they representthe rute ofrce of nature, it's fury, its power.

air--angel--not much else comes to mind. You could do the wind gods of greece. Angels should agcutally be genderless, if you ever wantedot descirbe that in your book, i would suggest thinking of voldemort but in a benevolent form (you could also take the description type from the depction of satan in the Passion of The Christ movie dirceted by Mel Gibson.

water--mermaid/nymphs--maidens of the sea, pretty simple.

fire--demons/djinn--demons are very much associated with fire. Djinn are in muslim myth as being made form 'smokeless fire' while humans were made from the soil. You could replace earth with humans, and make it an interesting reference to mythology.

The system I am thinking of has different layers like this:

Domains: These are the four basic categories into which the creatures of this world are divided. These are: earth, air, fire and water.

Oracles: Each domain has an oracle who provides wisdom/advice to the creatures in that particular domain (although they are very hard to find) and settles disputes within and between domains. These are: unicorn (earth), dragon (air), phoenix (fire) and tortoise (water).

Spirits: These are creatures that don't have a solid body and do have magical powers. It is their job to guard the domains and punish if there are violations (like people harming trees in the earth domain, or killing whales in the water domain and so on). Each domain has lots of them. So these would be creatures like a Djinn for fire. I still have to make a more thorough inventory of these as there will be lots of them.

Half spirits: These are creatures that do have a solid body and also have magical powers. It is their job to care for the domain so in the earth domain that could be fairies looking after the trees and so on. I also still have to make a more thorough inventory of these as there will be lots of these too.

Ordinary creatures: These are creatures that do have a solid body and don't have magical powers. These are all the animals, humans, but also mythological creatures (provided they don't have magical powers) like a Pegasus or griffin. It is in this layer of the system that I am looking for a human or humanoid creature for each of the domains. It will be these humans like the witches that worship the oracles.


Waste: Thanks for the suggestion. I did think about the dragon as he will be the oracle of the air domain. I hadn't thought of the option of making him be able to turn into a human. Quite interesting.

Garza: I did actually think about demons as like angels they can look like humans and do have an association with fire. They would have to be without magical powers though and I have my doubts if I can do that with a demon.

Wolfe: Wow. That is a lot of creatures, thanks. I can definitely use them on the other layers of the system. The wizard men living in volcano’s I found especially interesting. I might be able to have them be the humanoids without magical powers.

Olly: Yeah definitely Djinn, but I think they would probably end up on the half spirit or spirit level of the system.

OX: The fire sign huh. There might be options there.

Per that logic we could use Russians, seeing as a Russian girl once set fire to my coat at a festival, and not some crazy rock festival either, it was a film festival hahahaha
