I wasn't sure where else to post this. Bear with me (or redirect me) if it's out of place. Thing is, the book I am working on is thus far largely in outlines, notes, fragments, character bios and my head. It's hard to get a crit on these (maybe a brain scan?), but I wanted some feedback on the basic concept. So I will sum up the project, entitled "Book of Hours," as concisely as I can.
The simplest way to place the genre is low fantasy (that is, it has elements both of the real world and of fantasy.) It is set entirely-sort-of in a midsize Colorado town called Bethel. The main character, Allison, has just moved there and is also just starting high school. The time span of the book will be four years (s/he drops out of high school midway thru but it's those years.) Bethel is a "thin" place meaning that places, characters, ideas can drift dynamically between the planes of physical reality and supernatural/spiritual reality. In particular, an ill-intentioned being named Crow is seeking to escape from Bethel, where his divine mother has confined him. Little does Allison know that s/he is in fact the earthly manifestation of Crow's mom (via a weird sort of lesbian-themed back story with Allie's mom and an an angel...) I keep saying "s/he" because Allison, over the course of the story, transitions from male to female. Because of complications with pronouns, I decided to narrate it in "first person omniscient" (which isn't real but I don't care.) Other elements of the plot include a romance between Allison and a girl named Rachel, good and bad witches playing tug-of-war with the souls of high school kids, a descent into the underworld, a porcupine named Spike, and a demonic dog-breeder who demands a tithe of human children every seven years. Oh, and it has a happy ending.
