    Torn Between Genres

I'm in the beginning stages of plotting my novel, and have an understanding of where I want to take the novel and with which characters.

Yet, I am torn. I am a fan of Young Adult - Fantasy (Harry Potter-esque) as well as Adult Mystery/Thriller fiction (Angel's & Demons / Millennium Trilogy). I feel comfortable writing in either of these genres, and think I can make this project go either way (has a supernatural twist).

When someone has a story that is walking the line between two genres, what can be the deciding factor for the chosen genre?

    Which is most lucrative?

Which way do the characters tend toward?

I have seen a number of books published in two editions lately, same book but a children's and an adult edition, can you get the best of both worlds out of it?

After some extensive character profiling, this story is definitively going to be Adult Fiction. I guess I just needed to let the characters make the decision for me.
