MySpace is an extremely useful promotional tool, especially if you think your audience might be young and/or tech-savvy. I've gotten a lot of work offers from my "artist" page and visits to my website have quadrupled since putting up my page early last year.
Before that, I felt the same about the stigma. I still do but professional pages are a different sort of animal.

Indeed, it's what you make of it. On the music scene, for many bands it's frontline marketing.

Or at least a major part of marketing linkage...there are far more sites to promote music than writing. ReverbNation, last.fm, the61, iLike are all gaining on mySpace since they can be crosslinked directly and share content, plus rss feeds from a blog or website (and also share with Facebook). Pretty sure MySpace can take a feed, though I haven't checked.
That's a boon for anyone in an artistic field...as you say, it is what you make it. It gives you the chance to get eyes and/or ears.

I serve on the International Thriller Writers board of directors as Vice President, Technology. Six months ago, we formed a Social Networks Committee and established our presence on Facebook, MySpace, Twitter and other similar sites. Our chair maintains those on a continual basis and we've found that they are valuable tools in communicating with our members and their fans.
