Paula offered to show Hayley back to the Japanese garden, where Anya and Blake apparently still were, but in her haste the doctor almost left the bodyguard behind. When she practically burst through the gate, Anya looked considerably alarmed, dropping the red checker she’d been about to move.

“What’s the matter?”

“I’ve got it!” Hayley replied, “At least, I think I’ve got it – I’m almost sure – though I’d have to do tests to be certain – but I’d need your permission – if I’m right, well, it’ll be good, but not good, and --”

She stopped, realising she was babbling, and shook her head. “Not the point. Here,” holding out the journal and one of her notebooks, she pointed to the passages she’d read in the lab and a highlighted paragraph from her own notes on Derek’s illness. “You see here, Jonathan is worried about his sister Lavinia’s health; she seems to have reverted back to the tiredness and poor health they came to the island for. And when I treating your husband, you told me he’d been being treated for exhaustion before his fever came on.

“And here, look at the natives’ reaction to Lavinia’s fatigue. They’re alarmed, as if they knew what was coming. Both hers and Derek’s fevers appear overnight, with no prior warning except the tiredness.”

Hayley paused to let what she was saying sink it. “I think this disease goes through more than one stage. It develops so quickly into the raging fever … so I think there must be a dormant stage, where the disease grows within the body. Then the victim presents symptoms of exhaustion, and, finally, the killing fever.

“I’ll have to do blood cultures to be sure, but if I’m right there’s a chance someone may have already contracted the illness.”

“I’m going surfing!” Tai grinned. “Really big waves after last night. And there will be a party.”

Tai seemed really excited. Then he fell silent for a moment or two. Kari looked up from her kneeling positiion where she was gathering debris and waitied, almost sure he hadn't finished what he was saying.

“There will be a ceremony, after all, I’m turning fourteen.”

So she had been right, the chatty little devil definately had a story to tell. Kari wondered what the significance 14 was out here. Back home it would possibly be 16 but more likely 18 or 21 if it was some coming of age thing.

"What's wrong Tai? You're beginning to sound a little ...well afraid!"

Chad glanced up from vacuuming the pool as the two women hurried past on the path to the Japanese Garden.

"The doctor looks upset," he commented to Maria. The expression on Hayley's face gave him a momentary feeling of unease, which settled into the existing reservoir of "This wasn't what I expected" that lay within his perceptions.

"Hmmmmph" he said to himself in dismissive perplexity.

"The doctor looks upset,"

Mario glanced up as he spoke.

"Yeah, I wonder what's wrong. What do you think she's doing here? Why do they need a doctor?"

She finished, all the leaves were out of the pool and she was proud of her work. That'd show her parents! Sitting down, discarded her shoes and dipped her toes in the pool.

"Yeah, I wonder what's wrong. What do you think she's doing here? Why do they need a doctor?"

Chad turned to the girl.

"She said in the shuttle that she was here to do research - find new cures from the local plant life or something. I don't think anyone here needs a doctor. Although Miss Derring did look pale and jumpy, didn't she?"

The vacuuming finished, Chad began to pull the tube out of the water.

"Nice work on the leaves, Maria, it's definitely clean enough for swimming now. I'll just get this vacuum stowed and then we'll track down the bossman and see what's next."

Sensing that the girl was enjoying a moment of relaxation, her toes dipped in the cool water, Chad took his time with the pool equipment.

Adam glanced at Marissa, who seemed lost in her thoughts. Brow knit, he shrugged and finished dusting a light fixture. "Adiel, why not clean whatever happens to be on our right and just keep going until we're done with the floor?"

He placed his rag and Windex spray bottle on the cleaning cart.
