Call for Submissions
Vagabondage: Traveling about without any clear destination.
Vagabondage Press is pleased to announce that our new online literary magazine, The Battered Suitcase, is now open for submissions.
Vagabondage Press has been established to promote the publication of intelligent, imaginative and experimental fiction. Our goal is to offer an open forum for writers and artists that allows them the freedom to take risks, to offer unusual viewpoints and unique perspectives.
The Battered Suitcase is the flagship publication of Vagabondage Press and is an online literary magazine aimed at new directions in the exploration of art and literature. It is published online on the first calendar day of the month.
We would like to invite you to grab your own suitcase, take to your own road leading off to any and all unnamed destinations, and to capture it. We are interested in the best of your stories and artwork, and are searching for writers and artists who defy expectations and take risks. You're invited to share your stories from the Journey.
Come take a look at what we are all about and feel free to contact us with questions.

Nice, shiny! So new the ink isn't wet yet. Good luck with it. I'm assuming the download link isn't working because you don't have a 'current' issue yet?

Nope - ink's not wet. Our first issue will be published on June 1, 2008.
We're looking for well-written, intelligent fiction, narrative non-fiction and poetry. Anything looking for a home of it's own because it may not fit into the average size box.
We'll be branching into book-length fiction sometime late this year or early next year.

We are currently still reading for the June issue and are still open for submissions.
You can also submit for July and subsequent issues as well.
We do accept simultaneous and multiple submissions.
If one of our editors has decided NOT to use your work, please feel free to submit other work that might be more suitable.
We're an open-minded crowd, and we're looking to provide a safe space for your writing to be featured.
We'll also be having some interesting guest writers and poets in future issues.
Thanks everyone who has submitted work.
Keep 'em coming...

Not wanting to be churlish, but "Novelist, script-writer and purveyor of bad haiku" - what novel? I don't see any trace anywhere.

Have been shopping the first with the big houses and getting a lot of interest, been writing the second with a lot of angsty hair-pulling. Most of my fiction work has been in theatrical and radio performance scripts, which are rarely "published" even after they're performed. But I've had a fair number performed both onstage and on-air. Other hard, cold publishing credits are in non-fiction (books, articles and ghost-writing) under a pen name and two decades of technical writing, all of which I'm hoping to leave behind me.
I'm also only one of the writers and artists on-staff. Other staff members include other arts professionals -- New York book editor, film editor, professional artist, entertainment promotor and community arts coordinator -- currently scattered across the US and UK.
Hope that satisfies your curiousity.

"Traveling about without any clear destination" sounds kind of murky. I mean, the staff does desire to change the face of contemporary poetry---i.e. throw mud all over The New Yorker and Poetry. Tell me this venture isn't going to be one of those that close shop after a few months of mediocre submissions, less than zero views and a bitter, dejected volunteer staff, is it? If not, I'll submit somethin', I dig the idea of a new and budding publisher, daring in her own right.

That's one nobody can answer. Bear in mind though that all publications stand or fall depending on the support they get. Writers are usually the first to whine about non-paying markets and the last to dip hands in pockets to buy copies of the mags they want to appear in.

I'm interested to see how this will shape up. Please put up a reminder in this thread when your first issue comes out?

We consider ourselves more anarchists than revolutionaries.
We don't have any desire to topple the ever-respectable institutions, just kick out a little corner for ourselves. We have no particular destination in mind. It's the journey we're interested in.
I don't know about "bitterness" - quite frankly, we're having a hill o' fun, and it's been a blast putting together the first issue. We've had some really fantastic submissions from artists and writers and are going to be featuring musical guests as well -- with their lyrics presented as poetry, to help bridge the gap between music and literature.
We don't intend for Battered Suitcase to become a paying or money-making publication, even if we decide to invest in taking it to print. Battered Suitcase is more of an experimental proving ground. A place where new authors can get exposure and established writers can try out something new or different.
That challenge will come when we move into book publishing.
By all means - submit something. We always looking for well-crafted short stories.

Just an update:
The Battered Suitcase is now taking fiction/poetry/art/lyrics submissions for our July issue.
The premiere issue will go live on June 1, 2008 and features columnist Louise Beech serving up a slice of life with no side orders of redemption and J.P. Devlin's look at how a chance encounter can change the path of a shattered life.
Musician Adam Ficek offers lyrical poetry from his own DIY project—a folksy alternative to his usual role as drummer for the UK indie band Babyshambles.
Contributors include artist and poet Peter Schwartz, Stefanie Maclin, David MacLean and the 2005 winner of Radio-Canada’s "Young Artists" award, Lucinda Tang.
Art contributions include abstracts from Jim Fuess, the sweet and sinister portraits of Kelly Haigh, and outsider art from Dario Molinaro.

Fawn -
Nice first issue, congratulations. But it appeared to lack the anarchy I was expecting.

I actually agree with you on this. That being said, I'm still very pleased with the quality of submissions we had and pleased with the first issue as a whole, while looking forward to exploring more daring and daunting areas in the next issues already planned.
