Submissions needed for new e-zine
Hi folks,
I own a website called PANIC Writer, and we're branching off to launch a new e-zine on March 1st. Here's what we're looking for:
FICTION
Poetry
(no more than three poems per writer, per month)
Short Stories
(max. length 1000 words - no more than one per writer, per month)
NON-FICTION
Personal, literary, and scientific essays/articles
(max. length 1000 words - no more than one per writer, per month)
We DO NOT accept erotica, gore, lists, pointless rants, novel excerpts, or any literature that promotes hate.
The writer retains all rights to her or his work.
Feel free to send us a headshot to accompany your work - it's always nice to add a face to a name. We will also consider publishing photographs to accompany your work, but they must be in good taste.
Please e-mail all submissions to support@panicwriter.com.

Thankfully, that isn't representative of literacy levels here. But a village somewhere is missing it's idiot.

One question, MJW - as your business currently is selling essays, editing services, CV's, etc... why the e-zine? Or is it a vehicle to sell on your editing?

The e-zine is something we've always wanted to do - Panic Writer is willing to pay for the doman name and whatnot, so it's a great chance for us to go ahead with it. There'll be a small link on the e-zine site, leading back to the Panic Writer site, but otherwise, we're free to do what we want with it.
Personally, I think it's a great opportunity for new writers. I remember when I was staring out, it was hard to get published because everyone wanted you to have prior experience. We're not fussed about that - if you send us something well-written and within our guidelines, we'll probably publish it.
No one's making a dime off of the e-zine - that's what's so great about it. It's truly dedicated to writers and writing - not to making money.

I'm confused, you publish it but it doesn't generate any money? No ads or anything? Well I'd like to look into this magazine; a link perhaps?

What is there to be confused about? We have the chance to do something that we've always wanted to do, so we're doing it. We have a sponsor, so it doesn't cost us anything, and we therefore don't need to fill the site up with ads. You're the one with the "carpe diem" signature...
The site goes "live" on March 1st; I'll post the link then.

There are very few e-zines that either generate money or pay authors, its the nature of the beast.

Sorry, I'm a little ignorant in this field so I decided to pose the question.
This might sound really stupid too but since you're here: If the work is published for nothing, does it still count as a notch on the belt? (As in: Would it give a writer a literary credit?)

Yes, of course it would.
Publications are essential for a good resume, and you need a good resume to get writing jobs, or even an agent, should you want to publish a novel.
There's still a little room left, if you'd like to send something along.

Doesn't it sort of depend on the method of publication? Can anyone that sends anything in get published in it? Or are people chosen based on quality?
I can't imagine having something put in an e-zine based solely on the fact that you sent -something- in could be considered a notch in your belt :\.

I don't think that's what he meant... he asked if getting published, but not being paid for it counts as a "notch in the belt." I responded that I believed that it did - everyone has to start somewhere and every little bit helps you to get recognised.
To answer your question, no - not every submission will be published. And yes, submissions are chosen on quality.
I should add though, that if something is sent to a publication - any publication - and they don't print it, that doesn't mean that the author is a bad writer. You should always keep trying.

I'd like to but I'm still working out the kinks in the two short stories I'm currently working on. Though, in the future I will defiantly send something along.
