Manuscripts/Proposals required

Hi, on behalf of my publisher:

'Headstuff Books' publishes titles on self-help, spirituality, and the growth and usage of recreational drugs, particularly as Entheogens. If you have a title that you feel would fit in with our future catalogue, please contact us with a brief proposal in the first instance, at info@headstuffbooks.com

Thanks.

Simon Cooke,
Headstuff Books'

Hi Headstuff.

Are you a publisher (meaning you pay the author royalties) or are you a vanity press (meaning the author pays you to get printed)?

Both are fine, but it's better if you say who you are up front.

I'd say their orientation is pretty obvious from their website, actually. They are not in the business of printing books for people. They have a stoner book out and want more.

Too bad they had to change the name: I thought "How To Be Good At Getting Stoned" was a cool title.

By the way, not all publishers pay royalties: some buy outright.

Yes, if you read the "about us" on their website, they say they offer an attractive royalty rates to those they publish. They do not say, however, what their criteria is for publishing, or if they require a co-investment or not. More detail would be useful.

And out of curiousity, what sort of a publishing company wants to purchase books outright (Commercial? Industry-related?) and what advantage is there to an author to let them do so?

Thanks for the replies, though I'm a writer for them, not the publisher.

Headstuff have published two of my books, 'Brainworks - Meditation & Mind-Hacks For Creatives' and 'Cannabis & Meditation - An Explorer's Guide', with 3 more books from other writers on the way. They're not vanity publishers, or POD, but pay me a royalty on each copy sold. I didn't get an advance fee, but for one reason and another I was fine with that. I'd have to speak to them before discussing actual figures with anyone, but it's a better rate than I've found anywhere else, though I admit I'm no expert, it was the first decent deal I'd been offered so took it.

I feel they're actually doing things for me that I couldn't do as well for myself, like PR materials on tap, book covers, wallpapers - that I have input into, which means a lot to me - anything I or they can come up with. It's not an endless budget by any means, but sales are good. I'm happy, I've got to say, I'd lost hope of ever seeing C+M in print. And yes, I preferred the old title too

Luckily no co-investment was required, I haven't put a bean into this, though I am required to help out as much as possible in terms of getting my work seen, which is fair.

If you think you've got something that might appeal they're worth a shot. I know there's a new forum underway, and a deal coming up for new writers so everyone gets their own pages, etc. Worth a look.

Thanks Headstuff.

That's good information for anyone who is thinking of submitting to them. They sound like a decent small press.

Best of luck.
