Writing Credentials

Hey. I know that in the past people like Samuel Clemens were able to make a career of writing even having no formal training. Now, I'm just wondering, is it possible for someone like myself, with no formal training and no real credentials to be able to get writing jobs?

I'm a firm believer that anyone can write if they have the desire to do so. The general writing community is victim to the snobbery of many who are of the opposite opinion.

You will need to be able to demonstrate that you have a flair for writing if you want to earn from it though. When asking people to part with their money, you need to be in a position to assure them that you can write, and write well.

I don't believe a lack of formal training is a barrier - but it would equip you with some of the tools and techniques to help you get started and operating in specific areas. Practice writing whatever comes to mind. Not everything needs to be publishable.
Keep reading and make sure you try to read a diverse range of material, from newspapers to classics. You'll be surprised how much sinks in without you knowing it.
