Writing Competition with a decent Prize
Hey all, I just launched a writing competition at my site.
Winner gets advice and feedback on their writing from a published journalist. The journalist (Yvonne Ndege) has been published in the Independent (UK) and previously worked at the BBC.
More details below.

I do not write for a prize.
I write for my story.

Here's what I suppose is a writing competition with a "decent" prize.
Amazon.com: Amazon.com: Breakthrough Novel Award: Books
Yet how many of you are going to actually win? Read my lips--NONE.
Don't even bother.
Worry about honing your skills, and writing better prose. Learn to better your stories, before wanting to enter tripe like this.

I don't read TT's post, John, but since you are new here I thought I mention that he's kind of a jerk in residence and you shouldn't take him seriously or be offended.
It looks like an interesting site and I think free contests are cool ways to get attention. Good luck with it.
Not deprecating that, but just musing: why is it always the winners who get the critique? It's the losers who need it.

haha, thats true Lin. We want to encourage people to do their best I guess. I am sure people dont write for prizes, but advice on your writing is a fairly good way to improve it. Especially from someone who is published.

Going with what Lin said...Don't you think that if the winner is good enough to get published then maybe the second place winners should get the critiques and advice?

We are thinking of running a competition that will help those in need fairly soon. The thing is about rewarding the "worst" articles is that it may just be the person never bothered to try. The problem with rewarding the high scorers is that they may not need so much help.
I think we are gonna conjure up something for everyone soon enough.

Oh, I'm not suggesting that you change....you're running a free contest, which is commendable. It's just one of those little ironies. Them what has, gets, sort of thing.

Just a curiosity question, having been on a couple of judging panels in the past... will ms Ndege read every single entry, or are they sifted first? Or is she not a judge, just the prize?

She is the prize. But if there is a tie, she will decide the winner. Otherwise the person with the most votes will win.
