Oh geez, I don't know. I haven't seen the book of course. But here a couple of comments:
If you have an audience (either because you're teaching undergrad courses at some big school .... or you have a web site with good traffic... or a seminar business....) you can probably sell 100 copies or maybe slightly more a month.
If you work out the numbers, maybe that's, heck, I don't know $25K annually? $50K? I mean, if you're successful.
A really big however: If you don't have that all-important, built-in audience, you're hosed.
BTW, I think the built-in audience does two things: (1) It proves people are interested in what you have to say on a particular subject (2) It provides a way to pitch your product.
Just so people don't think I 'm pandering to the newbies, I will also admit that because our friend here doesn't have a built-in audience, well, yah, his prospects are pretty darn dim.
Also, let's face it, the more people (including agents) who look at a book and think it's not publication worthy, the more unlike it is that readers will buy the book.
