Writer's Markets books
How necessary is it to buy one of these every year? Can you get by with last years? Or is it absolutely critical that you get one every year?
I ask, because I was able to get the 2007 one for free, but here it is September. So, is it crucial to get one at the beginning of 08, or can I get by with the 07 one for a while?e

What different houses accept in terms of content/genre, un-agented writers, unpublished authors does sometimes change from year to year.
An older copy can be a good resource for locating websites, that may or may not have the information.
I get a new copy every year, but I tend to be a little obsessive-compulsive.

I'd get a new one every year. There are good articles included, and the list of publications and agents is updated.

I've considered buying them before, but I prefer to hear out for publishers and agents via word of mouth.
Though if I did buy them, I'd be buying the new one every year, for updated information.

By the time these books are published, the information is a year old, and 25% to 50% of the editors listed have moved on.
You can get all of this information free online. Just Google for things like "writer's guidelines" and "writer's deadlines." After you do some searching you'll find about half a dozen search terms that will work well for you.
Also, go to my site, The Creative Cauldron - Home and check out the Links page. You'll find links to sites that list markets. I would suggest subscribe to the writer's ezines that list markets too.
Have Fun,
Jeff

I get one every now and again... the last one I got was the 2007 Novel and Short Story market. There is a lot of good info in them, but I do not see the need to buy one every year.
I still flip through it for info and double check the market online. I also use duotrope.. One thing I will do is sit in Barnes and Nobles for a while and read the newest versions
