MLA - Modern Language Association

This may take a bit more in-depth research on your part; there doesn't appear to be a single, simple answer.

Modern Language Association (MLA): Format, Bibliography, Style, Convention would likely be the authoritative source.

The style recommended by the association for preparing scholarly manuscripts and student research papers concerns itself with the mechanics of writing, such as punctuation, quotation, and documentation of sources.
The MLA Handbook for Writers of Research Papers would probably be a good investment, at $17.50. (I have no interest or association with the organization or its book(s). )

It's basically just a formal essay. Title page, footnotes and a bibliography.

It's easier than it sounds and far less complicated than most explanations make it out to be.

The most important part I ever found was citing your references the correct way.

There are whole books dedicated to how to do this. I have one of them so if you list your source types I can give you a quick breakdown if you like.
IE: Newspaper, book, anthology, tv, video.....

There are too many ways for me to type them all.
