It is not as if all books written with a certain point of view are good or bad. That is hardly the deciding factor, is it? It doesn't matter what POV, what style or what setting you write. What matters is how well you write it.

There are no rules, there is only you trying to engage and entertain the reader. If you succeed in doing that, everything else is a side-note for scholars to argue over.

No reason not to do first person. Just don't assume that you're novel-ready or publisher-ready. Like any new skill, practice. Practice a lot. I agree with Rob, also, read like a demon...soak in how other people have written in first person.

Personally I love first person when it's done well. Janet Evanovich is a great example.
