What experience is relevant?

When I finish my novel and start sending it to publishers, I'd like to know exactly what sort of "experience" or credentials I should include.

As far being a published fiction author, I'm not one. But I have writing experience. I've been writing and editing for a year at a small news and entertainment publication in Baton Rouge (20,000 copy distribution), and as my full-time job, I've been writing for an online technology newsletter for about six months.

None of this seems relevant to my goal for a fiction novel, other than the fact that it may show that I at least have writing skills.

Does it help to mention this in a query? If not, any other suggestions?

it does take you out of the category of complete writing amateur, so i'd mention it, but keep it short and sweet... and, if your novel has anything to do with those occupations, it's definitely relevant...

btw, novels are fiction, so it makes you seem pretty 'raw' to refer to a 'fiction novel'... get the lingo right and you'll sound more professional...

best of luck with your query... if you want an assessment of its chances, drop me a line and i'll be glad to look it over...

love and hugs, maia

Yeah, I know a novel is fiction. I guess I was just trying to stress/clarify that I've been writing nonfiction as a career and that this is my first attempt at trying to get fiction published. Thanks for the advice.

If you have no relevant experience, leave it out. If the rest of your query letter shines, your experience or lack won't have the slightest bearing.
