Cool And So It Starts...

I have recently finished a short story. It's about 10 pages in length, 7,000 words roughly. It is a collaboration and we have been putting out quieries to magazines and newspapers trying to get a bite.

Does it really take months for queiries and such to pan out? If so, what can I do to keep encouraged? How can I utilize this waiting time!? And what resources do you have of places I could submit my work to...if any?

What do you do until then?

Keep writing, of course.

Seriously, if they accept your story and want more you'll want to have some ready.

Putting out queries?

Go to storypilot.com or suchlike. Find a magazine that suits your work. Send it.

Average wait is 4 months, so write something else, then send that, repeat til famous.

You don't send queries for shorts.

ditto mike's comments... no seasoned writer sends out queries for short stories... that's only done w/ book publishers and occasionally for magazine articles...

another good venue source is www.duotrope.com

No, we're greedy and want to keep all the good stuff to ourselves, so we lie a lot.

Also, format it properly.

A story at 7,000 words when formatted to a typical submission format is more likely to be around 28 pages.

I'd rather make cents than sense.
