Fantasy/SF Literary Magazines

I'm looking for literary magazines (print, not online) that publish fantasy/science-fiction stories and won't snub their noses at a high school sophomore who has never been published before. If I can sell a story, my mom won't make me get a summer job, so please, feel free to help me out.

BTW None of them will turn their nose up at you. Unless your story smells bad.

no one will know how old you are, unless you tell them... not till it gets to contract-signing time, anyway [if you're that good and that lucky]...

however, you're setting your sights too high, imo, if all you write is fantasy/sci-fi... 'literary' mags won't usually take such stuff, unless your name is a household word...

a single sale won't equal what you can make in a summer job, but if that's all it'll take for your mom to let you laze around the house all summer, making like a 'writer' then you should probably hit the fantasy/sci-fi mags, not the 'literary' heights...

btw, do you realize that it's already mid-may, and it will take weeks to months, for editors to get back to you on queries/submissions?

i wish you well, whatever you end up doing this summer... if you have to go to work, at least it will give you something to write about, right?

love and hugs, maia

So true.and even longer to actually get into print. You can generally reckon on a year between submission and print.

On Spec is a good magazine, but (unless you're Canadian, which you're not) a bad choice - the only way they can qualify for Canadian Arts Council grants is to ensure that at least 80% of content is by Canadian authors- that means, no matter how good you are, you have a 20% chance of getting in.

I know it takes a while, but Mom is willing to let me not get a job if I can prove that I am really trying to get accepted. She's nice that way. And I really don't want to wind up at the video store.

Indeed. A lot of Canadian journals have content stipulations like that. Good thing I'm Canadian

It's one of the reasons NFG folded - no grants, because the EIC wanted a global feel. Canadians only got in if they could compete with the rest of the world.

Unfortunately without funding, it's hard for a litmag to survive.
