America Library of Poetry's Student Poetry Contest
Anyone ever heard of it? There's no entry fee and it looks legit, so I believe I'll go ahead an enter it myself. You can check out the site at www.libraryofpoetry.com.
I do have a question though: it's a long shot, but has anyone entered or won this contest? I'm asking because I'm wondering what poetry they're looking for. They gave guidelines and such, and they show examples online; but all their examples show end-stopped lines without any end punctuation. It's a very awkward style (much like a I see the stereotyped teenage angst poetry), so I'm a bit worried; do you think they're only looking for a specific style? Honestly, I think I've written quite a few poems better than the winners, but I don't know what to do if my style isn't in the exact niche that these critics are looking for.
If anyone knows anything about this contest, I'd appreciate the advice.

Thanks for those links. I already entered; I suppose it can't hurt. Since there's no entrace fee, I really stand to lose nothing.

1. site is amateurish in appearance... [c'mon, red text!??]
2. an 'anthology' is 'forthcoming'... major red flag!
3. 'contest' is ongoing... no deadlines, no start/closing date... sure sign of ongoing scam, not legit contest...
4. as noted in above post, no judges' names listed...
5. ditto for 'winning' entries not meeting supposed line limit requirements...
6. very name is a joke... 'america library' is not even grammatical!
7. their address is a PO box...
8. "the american literacy council" that they tout as being 'affiliated' with or whatever, is a company that sells reading/speaking/hearing software and other 'tools' designed for ASL use...
9. bottom line?... imo, a S.C.A.M. of the worst order, one that is targeting our youngest would-be poets!... hanging's too good for 'em, imo... but i'm agin' all violence, so will hafta settle for LWOP...
hugs, maia

Great, ain't it?
Thanks maia. I've already entered, and I'm not too unhappy. If I don't expect anything I won't get disappointed. At worse they're vanity publishers, spammers, or thieves. And my work's not that great anyway.

Chances are, you'll be a winner and invited to buy a copy of the anthology. Let us know when that happens - or if it doesn't!

Heh, sure thing. I've already been nailed by poetry.com and others, so I already know the drill.
There's been a few scams targeting my school, too. I don't even know what to trust any more. I guess I might need to give in and actually enter a contest that requires a reading fee.

hey, is it some sort of honor to be turned into a verb?... or a mark of shame?

I entered and won, and they started mailing me literature and telling me that to see my poem (of dubious quality anyways, seeing as I was 14 and didn't bother editing it) in print, I should mail them a check for 60 dollars. I asked my English teacher the next day, and he said he didn't trust them on the basis that he had never heard of the "American Library of Poetry". After that, I never followed up with my money.
I think if they're asking YOU money for a piece THEY want to publish, it's a scam. Might as well self-publish, and I think that quagmire speaks for itself.
Hope it all comes out alright!
(BTW, maia: your expertise is exquisite, lol )

Sounds just like other scams I've encountered. You said you won; does that mean you won a cash prize or just a meaningless title?

I won no cash (quite the opposite), just the meaningless title of "participant".
Yay.
