Literary Agent Question
I know this sounds dumb, but I was wondering...I've read that some/most/all literary agents only get paid a percentage (about 10%) of what the author makes. So does this mean that they only get paid when you do--after you get published?

Yes that is correct. It doesn't always turn out to be fair, but its how it goes. Just like a real estate agent!!

anyone who asks for a single penny up front [before they sell your work] is a scam artist, not a legit agent... but standard commission for books is 15% these days... some hollywood agents repping screenwriters still take only 10%...
same goes for publishers... money goes only from them to you... never v/v... any who charge anything for anything are not legit publishers...

It explains to some degree why reputable agents are so selective, and will only take on a book they really believe in - it could take them months of work for effectively no return before they get any payment (when you receive your advance) or worse, months of work for no return.
