Finding the right Editing Service

To tidy up my MS I will need to have it picked over for spelling mistakes, grammar, and general advice. Obviously I cannot put the entire MS up for critique on this sight! I will probably have to employ some form of editing service. $$$$.
Has anyone had dealings with this? How does it work? Do they advise and then forget about you, or do they also check over rewrites?

How and where do you find the right one prior to paying for their help?
I assume that a constructive editor for one writer may be a disaster for another?

A major theme in my novel (prostitution) is dealt with in a blunt manner, to the extent that some readers, and editors, would find offensive. Furthermore, my writing style leans towards disjointed and chaotic. In the critiques of my pieces (on this sight) some reviewers have liked this approach, others have not.
Whose advice should I take in rewriting my work? I would need to find an editor that is sympathetic to my style and yet able to catch it when too scatter-brained. How does one find an editor they can trust?

Thanks.

If you feel the need to go the editorial route, I can recommend Martha O'Connor at www.writersconsultant.com She and her husband are experienced writers and editors, and know their stuff. They won't be offended by blunt writing (Read the first two pages of Martha's novel 'The Bitch Posse and you'll know what I mean) and they go far further than just correcting grammar and spelling, but offer a full 'book doctoring' service. Look at their website for details.

Alternatively our own Nickie Fleming is offering proofreading services through her new publishing venture. PM her for details.

as you're my most respected confrere here, mike, i'd be happy to recommend any editor you recommend so highly... i'll happily add that couple's site to my list of info for mentees, for those times when i'm asked for a referral, by those who can afford to pay for an editing service...

aside from your glowing review, their credentials are awesome!... pulitzer prize judge, no less!!!... thanks for the tip... hugs, m
