Suggested Reading | Good Characterization
Ok for the past who knows how long, I have been reading Terry Brooks' Shannara, and I've had an epiphany recently. All his characters are the same. All the main characters are the same as the last books, and I hate it. Since its practically the only thing I’ve read, I’ve even started writing like him. That’s the last thing I want. So to steer away from that, I’ll want a book that has characters that really exist. Not literally but that have motivation, drive, fears and beliefs.
As far as genre, I don’t really care. I enjoy suspenseful stuff, deep stuff, books that mess with you brain. The only one I don’t enjoy is the mystery. Unless its really good, I just cant get into that category.
