kimahri,

Here's something to look out for too - you can write fantasy even as you expand your audience to different genras. For instance, if you have a story featuring a relationship in distress where there's a happy ending, consider submitting BOTH to fantasy and romance zines. If you write a sci-fi story featuring an intergalactic police detective solving a crime, consider submitting to both sci-fi and to mystery zines.

You don't even have to write for multiple genras on purpose - just write the story, then take a good look at it to see if it would fit in anywhere else as well.

Given, you won't be as likely to get accepted in these other zines, but it'll only cost a few cents to try.

frank...
btw, it's 'genre' even though pronounced more like you spelled it...

thought it might be a typo, but since it's repeated in your latest post, figured i should say something... no offense meant... only mentioning it so others won't hamper their chances by misspelling it in a query...

hugs, m

Gotta start somewhere, I'm being published in a University magazine, the first thing I've ever sent in. It's not a huge deal but it's a start, and we all have to have our beginnings somewhere.

I'm not so keen on becoming a famous writer, but it would be nice if I could sustain myself from my craft which very few writers can do. Other than that just to see my darlings in print would be a life's dfream come true.

Always remember the golden rule - Money flows to the author.

It should never, ever be any other way.

And Kalibantre, there's nothing wrong with university presses. One of my first stories appeared in a University magazine.
