Working with PA isn't self publishing, you moron. It's getting published by a Vanity House and know scam artists.

Anyone who charges to print our work is called a printer, not a publisher
Well, no, they aren't. If you don't know what a printer is, ask. But it sure as hell isn't a vanity house or POD publisher...who don't own presses.

any company that doesn't pay for the privilege of publishing your work and doesn't market and distribute the book to brick and mortar bookstores is a vanity publisher,
Another mis-conception. I won't even go into the long spectrum that currently exists between vanity houses and traditional publishing, but there are plenty of publishers these days who do not distribute to bookstores.

This is a complex question, that is getting more complex with recent technology and new business models, and tossing around inappropriate words and over-generalizations doesn't make it any clearer for anybody.

I'm not the only one on this forum who has made money by self-publishing.

But nobody makes any money from scamsters like those under discussion.

Thing is there are LOTS of ways to go about this. Anybody thinking about it should do some real research. There are plenty of informative forum posts and tutorials on the web.

hahaha

A traditional publisher does not charge you anything... in fact they actually GIVE you money to publish your book (go figure). and while a traditional publisher may not spend a great deal on marketing a new authors book, they will spend some and not only that but your book will be in bookstores!

but you know... maybe I will go with Publish America
