Question What should a new writer put in a cover letter?

Hi,

I am thinking about submitting my work to some US literary magazines and am not sure what I should mention about myself in the cover letter. Since I haven't been published before I don't have any previous credits to my name that I can include.

In this situation, is it best to just write that I am offering my work for consideration, and not mention anything else ?

I've searched for info extensively on the net, but all advice I find invariably says that you should mention previous noteworthy writing credits in your cover letter. I haven't been able to find any suggestions on what to write instead if you don't have such credits.

Any tips would be appreciated!

Thank you.

if you've no writing history, it's best to not mention it... you can say something about what qualified you to write the works, if they relate to some area/s of expertise you are well-versed/experienced in... if not, say nothing and, as you suggested, just ask that they consider your work for inclusion in their publication...

be sure to have someone knowledgeable take a look at your material, before submitting, to make sure it's really ready to be seen... best of luck to you...

love and hugs, maia

Keep it simple

I would keep your letter short and sweet. Don't be afraid to introduce yourself as just starting out--many journals are looking for fresh new voices. And if your writing is good, it will speak for itself.

The thing to remember is that editors get mountains of submissions every week, so they don't have time to read a long letter with your life story in it. Just a few lines introducing your story (don't summarize the plot, though) and how you'd appreciate their consideration of your work.

Good luck!

PS: Journals for new writers

Two newbie-friendly publications I know of are New Letters and Quarterly West. I published my first piece in QW. They are a great journal.
