Building A Readership For Publication (Sci-Fi)
I recently attended a conference for writers in Columbus, OH and had the chance to pitch my sci-fi novel The Eden Project to a couple of editors in two separate ten minute sessions. I was quite nervous and neither editor bit on the pitch, but I did get some good advice out of it. I thought I'd share what I learned and see if anyone else has received similar advice.
Anyway, here's what they told me: Sci-Fi is a tough market. Publishers are really hot for fantasy and are essentially ignoring Sci-Fi at the moment (never mind the fact that fantasy is normally considered a part of Sci-Fi). They generally won't publish a new SF author unless they've already developed a readership. There are several ways to create a readership, and he recommended attending conventions to pitch your stories to readers and develop a fan base.
What do you think? Anyone else heard the same type of advice about pitching SF?
