I have no particular skills but I have read all my life (I am 63) and a lot of it non fiction so I have a fair bit of general knowledge, I try to get about and read a bit of everything but I am not very keen on fantasy/horror.

How does one become a mentor or a moderator? This all looks like so much fun

So, I've checked out all the mentors and moderators, and they either seem to have predilections for poetry, sci-fi, horror or fantasy. My novels are action-adventure. I'm inspired by Tom Clancy, Vince Flynn, Michael Connelly, and Jeffrey Deaver. Who can I ask for help around here, if you don't mind my asking?

When the forum needs new people to look after it, they admins and managers search for the people who've been the most helpful throughout their time here, and inquire if they would like to be a moderator (I think). But it's not all fun. You've gotta be dedicated to the forum, and spend at least ten to twelve hours a day on it, monitoring every post and critique (that's why they're called 'moderators'). 'Mentors', on the other hand, are something I don't know a lot about, but I don't think there's much chance of newbies being asked to be a mentor. I think you have to be part of the site for a good few years before that can happen.

Please correct me if I'm wrong.

Sam.

I don't do poetry, sci-fi, horror or fantasy [not well, at least]; they're not my chosen genres.

You can ask anyone for help. If they can, they will. If they can't, they might be able to point you in the direction of someone who can.

Sam, I'd say the best way to get help, especially if it's work you're serious about publishing, is to post in the Writer's Workshop.

I like science fiction and intrigue, too. Have enjoyed a lot of Tom Clancy's work before he sold out.

He sold out? How? Yeah, I'd be the first to admit that his work has gone downhill something serious in the last five to ten years. His first eight or nine novels were amazing. My favourite is 'Clear and Present Danger'.

Hi Sam Winchester---My names is Gary Lazenby although I answer to ablelaz. I too write in action-adventure, with preference on the western. My favorite authors would have to include Zane Grey, Jack London and Al-More, not sure just how the last guy spells his name.

My first love is the western and I have a completed novel, called Shootout at Saddle Rock.

I then developed a love affair with the short story, of which I have about twelve, ranging in length from about fifteen hundred to seven thousand words.

My strengths would have to be story line, credibility, and a strong sense of character development. My weaknesses would be the technical side of writing punctuation and grammar.

If it sounds to you like we might have something to offer each other, drop me a line perhaps we can explore the possibilities.

Talk to you soon—ablelaz. PS. If you prefer e-mails--ablelaz1@sympatico.ca

I wanted to be the porn, drugs and senseless violence moderator but they flat out refused. Something about the nature of moderation. So you're on your own.
