Contacts and AoAA

Do you have to put the contact name of a single agent within an agency on address part of your package?
And should you only send manuscripts to people within the "Association of Authors' Agents?"

You can put a single agent if you want them specifically to get it, but no, you don't have to. And it would be safer to send to AoAA, but not necessary.

Thanks paperthin

But while this is here could someone show me an example of a preliminery letter?
I have seen a few online but they don't seem all that good, and step by step guidelines are just confusing.

i realize you're in the uk, but in the us it's always best to send a query to an individual agent... sending it without a name brands you an amateur before your envelope is opened, and relegates it to the bottom of the slush piles, or worse...

i don't know how it works there, but in the us, agents who're not members of the main agents' ass'n are not liable to be either as legit or as good at the work, as those who are... i'm sure there are exceptions, but when dealing with a non-member, better check them out thoroughly before agreeing to be repped by them...
