Book rights

Just out of curiosity, if you have a book published by XX Press, they have their run with it, and you think you might be able to sell it to YY Press, who is much bigger and has more money, can you?

I recently came across a situation in which an author made the jump from a small press outfit to Vintage (I think), using (I think) the same novel.

Thoughts?

The smaller company won't publish until you sign a contract, in which case you are binded to them until the next renewel time. When the contract ends you are free to do what you want, but you can break it by going to court although the publisher would more than likely sue you for it.

But if you mean can you just hold out for a better publishing company until you are published then I can't see why you would send it to a lesser company in the first place.
Unless just to tease them.

it's not uncommon for such 'jumps' to be made, but it's nothing to count on, either... especially if the 'small press' is any version of a vanity publisher, as traditional paying houses don't take such stuff seriously unless it's sold millions of copies... or, as in the case of the grade school level writings of james redfield, been touted by oprah, who clearly put schlock appeal ahead of writing skill...

I guess it would depend on the contract you have with the "small time" publisher. Most of them have non-exclusive rights, which means you can publsih with another company as well.
Best to read the contract carefully!
