Building Readership Before Publication

I was wondering what everyone else was doing to build their readership before being published. My agent suggested creating a blog, which I did, but I'm curious about other avenues. Any experiences to share?

a woman who goes by the pen name of delphine lecompte has amassed quite the cult following by submitting work to electronic publications on the net, and her first novel was just picked up by a fledgeling small press publishing house - Thieves Jargon Press. You could try submitting work to ezines or print magazines, you could do local readings of your work, or, if you've got a novel in the works, send excerpts to zines, magazines, or wherever. A blog's a decent idea, but so are forums that writers and readers frequent.

Besides having a blog, you can create your own discussion group at MSN or Yahoo (or other). You can try and find as many members, and then of course you can talk about your work. I do have such a group with nearly 200 members.
Also, being a member of forums is quite helpful. You get to know various people, and they get to know you.

Right now, I'm in the same place as you. I dealing with it by trying to publish short stories and nonfiction pieces in e-zines and literary journals until my novel is finished and published. My writing group of two years has recently started its own e-zine, Halfway Down the Stairs, and that's been a really fun experience.

What is the big project you eventually hope to publish? Novel? Memoir? Short story or poetry collection?
