warning:

if stories are being collected for an anthology, they should be paid for... even the chicken soup bunch pays $100 per...

anyone wanting to use your work for free and supposedly intending to pay you later should be looked at carefully...

is there a contract spelling out what will be paid when?...

do they have a publisher lined up?... or, will they self/pod-publish?...

if the latter, will they then try to get you, your family and your friends to buy the thing if and when it's in print?...

what rights will they acquire with your 'accepted' work?

'free' contests never are!... there's always a catch somewhere... don't risk your work blindly... check out all such stuff at preditors and editors and if not given a clean bill of health there, run!... if it's not listed yet, check it out yourself, by asking the parties in charge the questions listed above...

Good questions. I didn't want to answer all of them here and create a big long post, but anyone who clicked on the link -- http://www.kidmercurypublishing.com/workshop -- will see them there. But here's the deal:

No upfront payment.
Royalty = Reveue Received Per Copy - Cost Per Copy / 2 / Number of contributing authors.

Example: Let's say the book sells for $10. Let's say after shipping and printing and such that leaves $5. Divide that by two and you get $2.50. Let's say there are 10 stories, so divide the $2.50 by 10 and you get $.25 per sale. Obviously not a ton of money, but a good way for authors to get some free publicity.

Rights: Non-exclusive. Feel free to publish it all over the place if you want, publish it in other books, etc. There will be a digital version of this that is distributed free though, so please bear that in mind.

Once again, the primary objective of this is to give talented authors exposure. We are more concerned with exposure and less concerned with revenue. If you are talented and you get exposure, revenue will be easy to obtain later. The hard part is getting exposure, which is what we're trying to do.

Feel free to ask more questions, either here on this thread (if the mods find that to be acceptable) or over at the forum referenced earlier. There are no hidden tricks. I wish I was that clever, but I'm not.

Sorry, the inconsistencies stem from replying too quickly. I apologize.

To answer your questions:

1) Limit is 3,000 words.

2) The price will probably be low. This is more about promotion then about revenue -- hence the free digital version.

3) Printing will be done via a self-publishing service, and then distributed to online bookstores, reviews, etc.

4) It is stated on the site that a more official terms will be given out when the time arises. The revised formula with the division by 2 proposition is to have funds that can be reallocated towards more aggressive marketing.

I don't expect to make money from this proposition -- in fact I expect to lose money. What I am hoping to get, though, is mass attention, which for anyone who doesn't have it already, is tough to get. And hence I'm willing to put a lot into getting it.
