times may be a-changing, then... but i doubt most would take time for such gimmicks, since they sell mss, not videos...
who were the agents?

Heh - sorry. Like most writers, I'm fairly secretive with my info. I'll divulge such information after the dotted line has been signed.

yeah, but you said they don't represent the genre you write in, so why the secrecy?

that's a bit of an unreasonable request, i think. i know i would sever ties with someone throwing my name around the internet without my consent. pretty unprofessional.
that being said, i'm not particularly taken by the idea of making a film or video, but i'm not an agent and have had no dealings with them, so don't take my comments are the end-all-say-all in the matter, because i know you were going to
whatever works for you works for you, so i say go for it.

sorry, but that's just plain silly!... agents need to be known, in order to get clients... they won't get them by hiding off in corners, hoping not to be noticed... their names and agencies are listed in any number of places, all over the net... why do you think most agents these days have websites!??

I agree with Maia on this one, and also on the one about plain writing. If you want your manuscript to be considered by an agent or publisher, you have to write well.
For me (a future publisher, offical start next January) this is important: the first few lines of your ms. They'll tell me all I need to know. If you get my interest going, I'll read on - and perhaps you will be offered a contract.
As a publisher I also need to deliver to the public the books they want. It would be pretty useless to publish a book that won't be read or sold (that would be commercial suicide). I may regret this decision - sometimes a book is extremely well-written -but unfortunately, it can't be helped.

Maia, there's a difference between consentual advertising, or even word of mouth, and what you are asking nethawk to do. you want him (or her) to take something that was said privately and make it public, without the agent's consent. and asking someone to do that on a public forum is JUST SILLY. let me ask you this, then. why does it matter that he/she give you a name, or several? if it works for nethawk, then it works for nethawk. you made your point that you don't think making a dvd or film is worthwhile, especially for beginning writers and gave your reasons, which is exactly what i think you should have done, especially given the experience you claim to have. but calling nethawk out like that serves in public NO PURPOSE WHATSOEVER. a pm would have been more appropriate, even though i still think he OWES YOU NOTHING.
you ask him why the secrecy? why are you pressing him so much for names? he posted his opinion, you posted yours, so why go out of your way in your attempts to discredit another member who was only giving his insight, just as you were?
and if you honestly believe that i was making the statement that agents don't need to be known and that i think that they should hide themselves in corners, then...well...theres nothing i can do about that except nod my head and smile.

i'm afraid you're reading all kinds of things into my posts that aren't there and were never meant...
and you're accusing me of sins i'm really not committing... i merely asked who the agents were, because i was curious about which ones think videos are a good idea and would like to check out their websites to see what their rationale is...
because i mentor hundreds of aspiring writers per year, i need to keep current on the latest trends in publishing and related issues... so, my asking, was due to none of the ulterior motives you imagined...
how you can think my questions were aimed at 'discrediting' anyone is a mystery to me...
and, fyi, agents don't mind their names being 'mentioned'... no harm whatsoever comes to them, from doing so [as long as they're not maligned], since they're already out on public view... they only mind having their clients tell people they'll rep them, since that's a decision they make themselves, after having been queried...
i wish you'd drop this now... no good purpose is being served by taking me to task for all kinds of things i'm not doing and haven't done... you seem to be the only one here who thinks so, in case you haven't noticed...
love and olive-branch-extending hugs, maia

Video? Pah!
Once you send your queries out, you're due a long wait. In fact whether a novel or a short story, you're due a long wait.
You're a writer. Fill the time by writing the next one.
