Amazon Shorts
Has anyone seen the program that Amazon is running where they post short works from authors and sell them for .49 cents? It's called Amazon Shorts. Is this open to all writers, published and unpublished? Any information anyone has would be welcome.
Thanks,
- J

just heard about it on cnn... i don't know if it's up and running yet... think it might just be 'in the works'... why don't you just contact amazon and ask???
my best guess would be that it's only for unpublished works, since they will probably want first rights... wouldn't make sense to do reprints, when the reader can read 'em for free 'out there' wherever they've been printed...

Try here
How much you would make as an unknown is an issue though. I can see people spending 49c on a Danielle Steele book (not that I would, I would sooner use my genitals as brakes for my car) but I. Unknown a writer from Denver who works as a fork lift truck driver.... well, I'm not so sure.

I sent Amazon an email about the program and received a form response back that they would contact me with more informaiton. That was about a week ago. Haven't heard anything back from. My guess is that they are looking for published authors who can provide unpublished work. If anyone knows more, let me know.

maybe they meant 'can'!... as in, 'able to' rather than the 'be allowed to' of 'may'... i see it as more an 'am i able to' issue myself, since 'may' would mean i had to have their permission to even submit something...
the difference is subtle, but major, imo...

Here is the reply I received from them:
Quote:
Thank you for your inquiry regarding Amazon Shorts. As you saw, the program recently made its debut on Amazon and we're confident it will be a tremendous success for both authors and readers.
In order to be eligible for the program, an author must be the sole writer of at least one full-length published book currently for sale on Amazon.com. Your name didn't appear when we did a general search on our site. If this was an oversight and you do have books for sale on Amazon, please respond with the titles and ISBN numbers. Thank you again for your interest in this exciting new program.

it'll be interesting to see if "the sole writer of at least one full-length published book currently for sale on Amazon.com" includes self and pod-published folks, as most in the industry don't consider such stuff as 'published'...

If Amazon were smart, they'd open this up to everyone. They aren't seeing the business potential here, I don't think. A lot more people would be interested in "third-party publishing" with them online than with, say, a run-of-the-mill POD publisher. They could run the service in the same way, in that sort of give and take method that POD uses, and probably make a lot of money--which is what they're after anyway.
But I digress. I just think they're making a poor business decision...
