Open Call for Submissions-- Be Which Magazine

Which Press is accepting short fiction pieces, poetry, essays, visual artwork, book and film reviews, commentary and interviews for the inaugural edition of its bi-annual journal, titled Be Which Magazine. This high-quality format journal is structured to present multiple perspectives by authors and artists on their chosen subject. As such, we ask that each submission be a pair: of poems, stories, essays, photographs, or other visual artwork. Each dual-submission should bring out the complexity of an idea by showing it in two distinctly different lights.

The number two--as opposed to three, four, or a hundred--is preferred primarily due to the practical considerations of space; the number two is not meant to imply duality, merely serve as a means to show different perspectives. The concept is purposefully left open to the artists and writer’s interpretations.

Submission guidelines:
As the editors of Be Which magazine realize that not all work may fit into the usual categories as listed below, we offer them as a general guide. We accept:

--Poetry (no form restrictions, length should be 3 pages or less per poem, please)
--Short Fiction (length should be 12 pages or less per piece, please)
--Short Non-Fiction (no subject or style restrictions; 12 pages or less, please)
--Visual Art (photography, digital art, painting, collage, and drawing preferred; will consider other work if captured well by the submitting artist in 2-D format)

As noted, work must be submitted in pairs as a means to show different perspectives. That may mean two poems or a poem and a collage that are related, for instance. Another option might be to modify one piece in a meaningful way to create a second, related piece. Two authors/artists may also co-submit work that is related.

Submissions will be evaluated on both the strength of the individual pieces, as well as the statement the two pieces make in cooperation (or perhaps conflict) with each other.

Send all work via email to submissions@whichpress.com. Written work(s) should be pasted into the body of the email rather than sent as an attachment. Please reply to info@whichpress.com if interested, or visit www.bewhich.com or www.whichpress.com.

No problem.

I'm just looking over your website... seriously considering submitting to you myself

I wasn't quite clear whether the magazine is a paying market, or if that's just your book publishing?

Also, what is your position on publishing stuff that's previously appeared online? (eg here, or on my own site)

Thanks.

Please do consider it. Unlike the book side of things, the magazine will pay only in copies, unfortunately. However, publishing work that has appeared in electronic format should not present a problem. Let me check with the editorial staff to be certain.

I'm very interested.
Is this a hard-copy magazine or one that is solely online?

Hello Ian,

It is a hardcopy magazine. We will start with between 5 and 10 thousand copies, and then move from there.

Spudley,
If you're still "listening" I checked with one of the editors, and he said we evaluate previously-published work on a case-by-case basis, but it probably wouldn't be a problem for us to accept as a contribution.
