a writer i was helping used trafford for his children's books... they didn't turn out a bad product, but included too many goofs that should have been caught... and the price they set per copy didn't allow for much profit to the writer...

Thanks, Maia, for the info. I will add that to the list of companies I am keeping a record of. I am actually compiling information for an article I'm writing about the fraudulent companies who are out there just waiting to get a hold of a writer. Are there any other companies you might have heard about? Thanks again.

Cali

i wouldn't advise anyone to use a pod or any other version of vanity publishing, unless all they want is some copies of their work for family and friends...

traditional publishing is the only way to go if one wants to establish a career as a writer, as self- or vanity-published writers and their work aren't taken seriously in the literary world... understandably so, imo...

as for the 15% agent's commission, having an agent will almost always guarantee you more than that in obtaining a better deal than you can get on your own... also, an agent will hold your hand through the process and advise you if work is needed to be done on your ms before submitting to publishers... but no legit agent will charge anything up front and will not provide or recommend any paid services...

for any publishing venue, the best thing to do is check out any you're interested in with 'preditors & editors' first... and with 'writer beware' on sfwa's site...

some small companies are good like

www.densmorereid.com

if you are publishing inspirational stories! I've had nothing but good luck with them. I did not have to pay to publish my book and I have had fairly decent royalties paid to me since the publishing!!

The deciding factor about the story was, I think,..my book was about two local "charactors," who were well known in this region,..I was one of the local charactors,..and the book sold well in the region in which I live!!
