Hi,
I submitted one of my poems to the famous poets website and I'm trying to figure out how on the level they are. It just seems fishy that they are inviting me out to this convention and I have to pay $595 to go out to Reno. They're saying that I'm getting presented with an award for excellence. They're saying my poem will be published...it isn't even that good and that I'll get a personalized trophy for nothing. I'm just trying to figure out how on the level they are. If anyone has any information or experience with this group, I would greatly appreciate it. Thank you very much.

Let me guess...it's the International Society of Poets? Or something like that? It's the same game, different title. I've been getting letters from them for a long time, and was stupid enough to pay them to publish my poem in a book that I will never profit from. It's all a scam I'm sorry to tell you. (Look to the right of this page under "Related Links, and click "Poetry Scams". You'll find "Famous Poets" listed.) Don't let them make anything from you, and keep searching for other resources. Throw the invitation away, and don't let them get you down.

What 'famous poets website' is it? Please don't tell me it was poetry.com, because that is a well documented scam.

But either way, it certainly sounds very fishy from the description you've given.

And can you afford those six hundred dollars? When it comes to getting paid for your writing, it's probably a bad idea to spend more to get it than the award or payment is actually worth.
