The Smashwords Style Guide is good for anyone formatting a document in Word.

The ideal when preparing the format for Kindle is to do it in basic html. It's possible to do it in Word and then save as a web page but it then needs to be cleaned up because Word throws in additional code. For most people, getting it right as a Word document is the best answer unless they know a little about html coding. Amazon's converter will accept rich text, Word, pdf and other file formats but prefers html. Calibre is the same.
