When considering an agent it's worth checking that they are a member of either of these two associations:

USA - Association of Authors' Representatives

UK - Association of Authors' Agents

This is not meant to suggest that agents who do not belong to either organization are disreputable. However, an agent's code of practice should conform to those outlined by these associations.
