    Any runners?

So, aside from working and writing, a lot of my time is me trying to get back in to running.

    Anyone else here a runner?

If you are, what shoes do you run in (I work in the footwear department of an athletic store, so I ask everyone I meet that runs.)

    I run in Asics Kayanos.

What do you listen to when you run, where do you run, when do you run!? Discuss!

I run in what ever I'm wearing at the time. I listen to the shrill screams of the wife. I run in any direction that is not where she is, and I usually run when I've done something to make her REALLY mad.

I'm getting back into running as well. I live near a riverside park which had good three four and five six and if you're feeling perky seven mile tracks.

I'm just starting again buy managed to do a 4 mile and a 3 mile last week as well as a boxing/kickboing/resistence workout at the gym.

The 3a nd 4 mile courses are father flat apart from the hill at the end which I have to force myself to run up everytime. All the other courses are rather hilly so they really make you dig deep

I have a pair of crappy 20 quid trainers (about 35 dollars) as I can't afford anything new and I generally don't listen to anything unless I'm on the treadmill at the gym in which case I listen to Jake Thackray, the dubliners, Richard Thomspon or anyone like that.

Tell me, do you use mapmyrun ? Its a good program.

    Hi guys,

Good to see you getting back to running, including Potty. lol

I'm also getting back after decades of wine, women and song, and up to 80 cigarettes a day.

Oh man, the injuries of inactivity were extensive, I tell you. At first I could hardly walk, let alone run. Scary! Until I could run again I used the weights you see in my profile pic. Now I run Mon, Wed and Fri with weight days in between.

I run with a midfoot strike in Merrell Trail Gloves (flats) and I don't listen to music while training.

Very slow at the moment but hoping for a modest 24 min 5K or better after three more years training. i.e. by the time I turn 65.

Wishing you many miles of smiles,

    Ian

Unfortunately I haven't been able to run since moving to a new state last Sept. So, I'll be hurting when I finally do get back into it.

I always run in the mornings and I always go for the Asics, as they seem to have a wider toe box, which I love for comfort. As for music, my favorite for the actual run is a mix of The Eagles, Billy Idol and some smooth jazz. I have it arranged on my ipod so that the music with a hard beat comes first and the smoother stuff is at the end for a good cool down walk.

I try to run every day for 30mins, and sometimes I do intervals and sprints. I generally wear my Asics. The music depends on the type of run I'm going on. I listen to folk guitar sort of stuff when I'm running continuously, but when I do intervals I listen to hardcore

Potty, you're response was awesome, ha. Busted out laughing when I read it.

Yeah, I actually used to go running with some people who were super opposed to running with music. Mostly because we were a group running and we would talk and such. But I got so used to it, now I always run with no music. Even when I'm running on the treadmill. Though, I have always found running to be very relaxing and let me just zone out, so I never really needed music.

This is a good video I saw on the BBC news this morning about backward running... I gave it a go this afternoon and I have to say, I think I will be doing more of it!

oooh I'd love to answer this one! I used to run in school, and was quite fast...my 'memorable highlight' was when school placed me as a junior against the seniors two years older, in the 100 meters, and the 400 meters and I came first in both...spreading my hands out towards the end like I was flying...I felt invinsibel! ...I love the adrenaline just before you start a race...the sort you only feel when in competition...nervewrecking but great!
I've tried running again last year but only once in a while, jogging around the block or with my housemate who cycles slowly, having conversation until I am wheezing and unable to. This is a good reminder that it would be nice to start again...I feel like running 'cleans your lungs' if you smoke because you breath heavily and maybe induces ...tar removal? lol. also good for stamina..I've had a pair of TNs for the last four years that I wear almost everyday, everywhere ( I cant walk in heels) they are great except that once the air is a little pierced they will sing in squeak to you in every step, especially on certain kinds of corridor floor ( the kind in dance studios or basketball courts, I think)
Lol at backward running Potty! the video made me laugh It feels like just the sort of thing I would try... as is when I wait for the deo to dry I do these sort of...you hold onto your left ear with your right hand, and your right ear with your left hand, and bend your knees...inhaling rather than exhaling in every 'squat'.. I think its similar in that it makes it something 'a little bit weird' for the brain to experience..( I was inspired by an email sometime last year that said, if I remember right, that they get dyslexic children to do that exercise and it helps them) . I would try the backwards thing but maybe indoors as the neighbours might think I've gone totally bonkers otherwise!

    ...thanks for the laughs all.

On finishing a lunchtime 5K, hot day, shirt off, blowing like a steam train and beaming like a light, noticed a woman looking at me from her driveway. In fun I pulled a Usain Bolt "skyward point". Yep, there she was, peering up into the sky, wondering what the hell I was pointing at. lol

I wish I held the title of runner! I started running, only managed 2.5 miles run/walking and increasing/decreasing the next time and the next, but it's fizzled out strangely. I don't feel that pull or big desire to run I felt at the beginning. I want to get back to it though, it was pointed out that I had lost weight and I felt brilliant after the compliment !
I listen to whatever songs are my favourite at the time, and quickly get bored, then struggle to find new songs... Bah.

I used to have runners in the passage way, but the cats kept thinking they were dragons to be rolled over and disemboweled... oh, you mean like physical exercise? No. Not for a very long time.

Been known to run, well walk quickly, to the bars in my Diadora's.
On the return I measure the width as well as the length of the pavement. Or should that be sidewalk?

I used to. A few years after I got out of The Corps, my knees started to give out.

My only suggestion is to find a cushioned track, and get good shoes. Protect your body (especially your knees). As Geddy Lee once said: "We are only immortal for a limited time."

I still stay in shape, but I miss the feeling of wind blowing in my hair. And the Freedom.
