Things I have learned since coming here...

    1. There is a lot of talent here. I feel out of place.

    2. The phrase 'purple prose'. Dang, I did not know there was a phrase for wordy, flowery, inflated, over descriptive prose. I am in deeper doo-doo than I thought.

    3. There is a difference between 'critique' and 'criticism'. God help me not to fall into the latter grouping.

    4. Not everyone is going to like your stuff. Gasp! Not everyone thinks I will be the next Isaac Asimov, or Stephan King, or John Grisham, or Frank Herbert, or Tom Clancy????

    5. Well... that's okay. I ain't giving up!

    Best regards

    Carry on

We all start somewhere, CB. I'd felt the same when I'd joined, and I still don't think I really really fit. But I'm learning a lot.

    Thanks for the replies, guys!

BTW, Candid, I read your piece in the December NL... it was very good! Tells me you are fitting in nicely.

Some other things I have learned:

    6. PROOFREAD, PROFFREAD, PRFREAD!

    7. Writing is hard... but fun. Sometimes...

    8. There is about a 10% reply rate to thread views. Give or take a few...

Well, on to my day job!

I still don't feel like I fit in, but I'm sticking it out. Not sure why, but there you have it.

The site is a huge, varied, mish mash. Some parts are for learning, some are simply for fun; some places we show off what we can do alone, some are a co-operative effort, and some are competative. Nobody is going to fit in everywhere here, hopefully everyone will fit in some places. Personally I really enjoy reading some of the parts that are outside my comfort zone as a contributor, "Some day" I think tomyself.
