Yes. Many siblings have that kind of relationship. Many married couples I know do, as well - their spouse drives them absolutely batsh*t, but they can't imagine not being with them just the same.

OMG! My best friend and her boyfriend have the biggest Love-Hate relationship I have ever seen. I swear they hate eachother as much as they love each other! It can be quite entertaining to sit back and watch them interact with one another... ha ha... I laugh at them most of the time. I guess whatever gets them through!?!
“And now I’m looking at you,” he said, “and you’re asking me if I still want you, as if I could stop loving you. As if I would want to give up the thing that makes me stronger than anything else ever has. I never dared give much of myself to anyone before – bits of myself to the Lightwoods, to Isabelle and Alec, but it took years to do it – but, Clary, since the first time I saw you, I have belonged to you completely. I still do. If you want me.” ― City of Glass by Cassandra Clare.

Interesting about siblings and married couples...but is it fair to say that it is a kid of annoyance or not getting enough space that is what causes such strong opponent feelings rather then a hate/love feelings because they are so further apart?

could it be that they are too similar?

Too similar? Hmmmm... I would like to say yes, but I fear my friend may disown me if she ever found out I said so! ha ha.

Of course, though it's only a bad thing when that target of 'love hate' is a person. If you're not happen the vast majority of the time with a spouse, partner, girlfriend (mistress, hehe), then you should end. Periodic fights, disagreements are natural, of course, though they should be just that-- periodic.

Can't be bothered to hate, it is the most debilitating of emotions, it destroys both the hater and hated...

I think with siblings it's a matter of jealousy - who gets more attention from the parents type of thing. Stronger than annoyance, definitely. Sometimes they grow out of it, sometimes it grows until the 'love' part is a distant memory. As to the married couples - well, as my mother used to say, "You like someone because; you love someone in spite of."

Then again, hate can move people to action - hatred of slavery, hatred of bigotry, etc. Any emotion can be constructive or destructive, depending on how well one controls it.

    I agree.
Hatred is detrimental and destructice especially to person who ultimately holds it.
wether it is something you can control is another matter.
Experiencing hatred cannot be pleasant especiallu if the person is supposed to be loving.
I doubt very much that 'normal people' can exprience both towards other people.
I tend to call it frustration and stress as well as the lack of communication rather then hatred.

It seems you have just answered your own question. Why then did you start the thread in the first place? You could have just sat quietly in a corner and puzzled over this English-ism until you'd figured it out, and not had all these poor souls here running around like headless chickens.

Yes. For a great dramatized example, Nacian, please watch the movie The Lion In Winter starring Katherine Hepburn and Richard Burton.
Do not think it a kindness.

I love to hate; keeps things fresh and amusing. Plus most of this world’s population are scum and deserving of my heavy handed scorn, much like fat kids deserve to suffocate on candy or teenage mother's needing a good role model. Perhaps like suit wearing, know it all; arrogant, disruptive phallus jockeys need a swift scissor kick to the breeding bone. It's going to be a good day.

Nacian, this song is for you.

Celine Dion & Luciano Pavarotti - I hate you then I love you - YouTube

Love and hate between siblings? A former world champion boxer once stated that the best fight anyone will ever witness is a fight between two brothers.

Nacian isn't hoping for answers. She's hoping for a conversation.
