    The Hobbit (2012 & 2013)

Rejoice all who like JRR Tolkien: For The Hobbit: An Unexpected Jouney (Dec 14, 2012) and The Hobbit: There and Back Again (Dec 13, 2013) will hit in theaters next year. And yes Peter Jackson (director of LotR Trilogy) is directing this 2-part movie of The Hobbit.

I don't know how I've managed to get through 67 years without seeing/reading/watching anything to do with the Hobbit, but I shall keep up the good work... (Ditto Narnia & al)

Congratulations. I wasn't so lucky. I saw the first Lord of the Rings. I'd had enough when some guy was shot full of arrows, took 15 minutes to die -- talking the whole time. And then somehow, he came back to life. I may have that wrong, but whatever it was annoyed the heck out of me. When I got over that, I had trouble staying awake. Maybe the movies are better if you've read the books -- but I couldn't make it through one of those either.

(Sorry, Fartsy -- just not a fantasy guy.)

Hah! When a character is killed, the Hollywood formula is to increase the music volume, switch to slow motion, and prolong the character's final struggle as long as the budget allows. Linger on a moment of wide-eyed eye-contact between the protagonist, who's being held back by someone, and the dying character, for extra emotional effect. Add in a "noooOoooO! *character name*!!!" to push the audience into tears.

Make the character fall down, and begin closing his eyes, then suddenly he gets back up and fights some more, only to get knocked down again. Oh, the humanity! Even when dying he refuses to give up!

And don't forget to make the villain seem extra cruel. The audience needs someone to hate for this terrible cinematic injustice.

Oh yeah, and I'll probably see those films. I like Peter Jackson's movie style. It's over-the-top, full of big special effects and over-dramatic scenes. Good popcorn entertainment.

I'm assuming they will be about Bilbo Baggins finding the ring? I haven't read the books but I'm hoping there are some better villains than Orcs.
