    Christmas morning

It is just after half eight Christmas morning, I am the first one up to take my medication and so far it is dead quiet, not a car in the distance even. Soon the family will be up and my attention will be demanded by the family, for the moment I am on my own and free to wish all my friends here a very happy Christmas.

The first two cars went by, it is starting as I speak/write, have a great day everybody, and good writing next year.

Merry Christmas Olly, and best wishes for 2012. Merry Christmas to anyone else who reads this thread, too.

We were up at seven o'clock and a frantic two hours of paper ripping and faces of shock and surprise ensued. Much Peppa Pig and Jungle Junction assembling will follow and eventually we will have dinner around one, and for the first time for as long as I can remember I don't have to drive on Christmas day, so I have a lovely bottle of Chilean Merlot waiting to be opened. This afternoon we'll take Niamh out to see her new playhouse on stilts. We bought it from a company that builds wooden sheds, and so is sturdy and should last a good while. We'll paint it in the spring when the weather is drier.

Hope everybody has a great day, and, Olly, hope you enjoyed the peace while it lasted.

The sand of the desert is sodden red, -
Red with the wreck of a square that broke; -
The Gatling's jammed and the colonel dead,
And the regiment blind with dust and smoke.
The river of death has brimmed his banks,
And England's far, and Honour a name,
But the voice of schoolboy rallies the ranks,
"Play up! play up! and play the game!"

At half eight down here, the sun had been up for four hours. I’d been having nightmares about sandy bays in West Wales and was glad to stagger out for some java at half six. Riley and I had a quiet (not to wake ‘er indoors) celebration, with him ripping the paper from the prezzie that the Avon lady left for me.

Now the day’s winding down. Termorrer we’ve got the Boxing Day Test at the ‘Gabba, and Jessica Watson turning old male heads as she starts in the Sydney-Hobart.

Hope you Northern Hemisphereans are having a nice day.

    Hi Olly,

Reads like a wonderful relaxed, almost meditative, start to your Christmas morning.

12:10 am here in the true heart of England and I too am up, having disabled smoke alarms so the missus can cook the roast.

Enjoyed your early account and the spirited replies from Messrs. Blue, Bloggsworth and OX.

So, from an ignorant country bumpkin with no idea who/what are Peppa Pigs, Jungle Junctions and Jessica Watkins, a very merry Christmas and a successful writing new year to you all.

    12:10 am here
    Post meridian surely Ian.

Things have livened up a little, dinner is on and presents have been opened. Little girls grow up, it's all clothes and perfume nowadays Bilston. One of the best was Mum's from the girls, a calendar which they have posed for all the pictures in, umbrellas in April, watching fireworks for November etc., that made a mother happy.

It's two here and things are just quieting down. The morning was great, me and Dad cracked open the Gentlemen's Jack and had a drink.

No sign of relatives, and the turkey's on the go. Lovely.

    Merry Christmas all.
    Insert profundity here.

    Proper Christmas/Birthday presents:

The English Wordsmith: A Lexical Eclecsis
by the late David W Andrews.
The Revolt of the Pendulum: Essays 2005-2008 by Clive James.
A Point of View: The Book of the Radio Series by Clive James.

That's my reading sorted for a while...

Just after 9 am here in Minnesota. I've been up for a couple hours, cutting up apples for the pie and otherwise just figuring out what to do next. Brother is washing up yesterday's dishes, and then, between my son getting up, breakfast, and opening presents, I'll be baking up a couple pies and getting the turkey and dressing going for an early afternoon feast. No little kids left, I'm afraid (my son is nearly 30) so the presents aren't all that exciting but it will be fun. And then we'll be playing HeroQuest on and off during the day, with an early night since my son's flight back to the West Coast leaves at 7:30 am and it's a two hour drive to the airport. Not going to even think about his leaving again.

I chose them, I bought them from Amazon, now I'm waiting for the cheque from the wife....

I bought the distaff side a large book of historical maps of her homeland - Scotland: Mapping the Nation.

10:30 (ante meridian), presents opened, breakfast served and time to contemplate the first nap of the day. 1 1/2 feet of snow in the back yard beckoning the new snowshoing equipment to come out and play. Later, dinner at the grands. All the kids are happier than ever this day.

    Blessings to one and all!
