    Unintended Accumulations

I've spent half this month packing to move and the other half unpacking. A largish lorry was needed to haul me and my belongings the seven miles down the Old Northern Road from Consejo Village to Corozal Town, and five of us to load and unload. With my move, the village lost almost one percent of its population in one day. That's the same as New York City losing over 80 thousand people in one day.

In 1995 I moved to Belize with the help of TACA Airline, bringing everything I needed in a medium sized suitcase and two attaché cases. I had sold all I no longer wanted, including a house and a vehicle, and put the rest into storage which by now has been plundered by my grandchildren.

The point is that in a bit less than 17 years, without meaning to, I've accumulated a large truckload of stuff.

Emory King's Thanksgiving blessing comes to mind. 'Lord, forgive us for having so much when there are so many who have so little.'

    Amen.

I have the unintended accumulations of not only myself, but four children and a husband. Oy!
Right about now I perceive a beautiful freedom in simplicity, but alas, I like pretty things about me, books, movies, art, even toys.

Are you enjoying your new home?

I find it rather necessary to minimize my belongings on a fairly regular basis. I just run out of space, so a lot things end up getting donated or pitched. It comes in handy since I've moved something like three times in the last year. As a result, I find that everything I own all fits into my rather small car.

Hope you're enjoying the new place though.

It's good to have things, or a certain amount of things. But the paradox is - or so it seems to me - is that the more you have the more things you tend to be owned by.

Tiamat10 - Ben Franklin is reported to have said that 'three removes equals a fire'. That's still true more than two hundred years later.

Writ - My grandfather was of the opinion that things own us, not the other way around. Loading up that truck proved to me that he was correct, but you'll notice I continued to help load the truck, and I paid the man to haul it all to my new digs, and paid to have it unloaded.
