For me, it is a little of both. I write for my own enjoyment and that is my motivation. Having someone read it and comment on it is an added extra. As far as complying, I try to conform to the rules of grammar and punctuation. I have never aspired to be published or make money from it so there is no pressure for me.
I imagine that those who write to make a living sometimes have to compromise in order to meet the market's demand.

I'm not sure I understand the question.
Remember why you like to read, and inundate your writing with your love of story. No great writer ever found reading a chore.
