    Happy birthday, Nan

    102 today.

Born in 1909. She's lived through two world wars, seen huge social and technological change, and survived the tragic loss of her first child who died aged five.

The eldest of five siblings, she's outlived them all, and her husband too, who's been dead now for thirty-four years.

I know she won't read this, but I'm proud of her reaching such a whopping age. I didn't manage to get to see her today, but I'll be visiting tomorrow. I hope she's well and remembers who I am, though when she doesn't she only mistakes me for my dad, which isn't so bad. And she sings too me also. She's still got a cracking voice.

So tip your glass to Clara D. 102 and still going strong. Rock on, Grandma.

The sand of the desert is sodden red, -
Red with the wreck of a square that broke; -
The Gatling's jammed and the colonel dead,
And the regiment blind with dust and smoke.
The river of death has brimmed his banks,
And England's far, and Honour a name,
But the voice of schoolboy rallies the ranks,
"Play up! play up! and play the game!"

If I gave her a big hug she'd probably break.

It must be awesome being able to live long enough to see how drastically the world changes. Hopefully I'll live long enough to see flying cars and hoverboards. Maybe even aliens.

My friend's mother recently reached the same age. Investigating her family history my friend discovered her mother has a sister she did not know of who is now 101. It seems longevity runs in families, you may be around longer than you thought.

If I reach a century that'd make it 2075, and that seems like the title of some futuristic sci-fi film about Robocops or some such. Wait a minute! It does sound quite frightening, though. Mind you, it gives me more time to work on reducing those long, run-on sentences I'm so fond of and can't seem to tighten or find places for commas for and instead will pop in the occsional semi-colon or em-dash; plenty of time, indeed.

Remember time speeds up, when I was seven a summer lasted forever, now I am sixty seven and I am thinking, "But I was only just sixty six". Don't waste any of it, second chances and free lunches are both a delusion.

I'll drink to that. My ex's great-grandma lived to 101 and played cards with her friends until she was well past the ton.

Just you wait until you're 75. Then, you're no sooner out of bed in the morning and it's time for bed again at night.

102? Wow. Hooray for longevity and experience! Cheers to her health and I wish here more birthdays to come.
