shades of synonym
You may be able to suggest ways we can improve this, it is straight out of my head. I am starting with the fact that English has a larger vocabulary than any other language and that although many words are synonyms there are different shades of meaning to each word. For example the definition “Belonging to the place in which it is found or originated” could define; native; aboriginal; endemic or indigenous. The idea is to explain how they differ and give examples, thus.
Native means born or produced in a certain place, a native New Yorker. The type of temple native to South America. Marsupials are mostly native to Australia.
Aboriginal means people who have no written code and have lived in an area since before historical records began. The Ainu are the Aboriginal peoples of Japan.
Endemic is usually used about diseases and means continuously existing in the local population. Influenza is endemic in Southern China but mutations cause epidemics which sweep the world for short periods.
Indigenous is similar to native but excludes any external ancestry or introduction. Neither the Native Aboriginal people, nor the dingos which they brought with them, are indigenous to Australia.
Try producing your own shades of meaning for one of the sets below or make up your own set with a communal meaning..
A person who rejects the usual values and lives outside society is ;a renegade; a rebel; an outlaw or a desperado
Having warm feelings and a strong attachment is described as being; loving; doting; devoted or fond.
Having something in mind for the future could be; to intend; to plan; to contemplate or to propose.
